No, you can connect directly with your mobile phone. But it will be much more flexible to use with a WIFI router which allows you to extend your reach all over your house or even control the device from the outdoor. 

Firstly, please try to adjust the antenna and location where you put your device. Usually, the reception will be better near the windows, sometimes, an antenna signal booster will also be an option.

Usually, it happens when the signal is weaker than normal. You can try to input directly the station frequency in the app or try to search the frequency with the “Step” option which will increase the frequency in smaller steps. It takes a longer searching time than usual but it gets a better chance to lock the station.

It depends, all setting and messages will be kept in the internal memory, and they won’t be lost even in a power failure situation. If you don't install a backup battery, you need to manually input the time or simply synchronize by connecting with your mobile, easy, right?
